The Ultimate Wardrobe Essentials

Now, you all know I love color, but there are a few staple pieces that are necessary when creating a well-rounded and versatile wardrobe. Some call this a “capsule wardrobe”, and it describes a collection of essential items that never go out of fashion, are multi-purpose, and most importantly, make you look and feel your most confident. Personally, I think ensuring you have these essential items is ultimately the best way to invest in yourself. I mean, when you look good, you feel good, and you definitely can NOT put a price on that.

The following ideas are universal clothing essentials that can be paired with at most of the items in your closet. One great rule to follow is to make sure that these items are neutral, versatile, and timeless enough that they can be paired with at least 5-6 different outfits. I find a great tip before you buy is to picture yourself in the item paired with the clothes you already have.

If you can instantly think of at least 5 different outfits you can wear the item with, then you should definitely consider buying it. Here are my recommendations for the ultimate wardrobe essentials:

Blue Jeans

No one can deny the necessity of the blue jean. They go with absolutely everything, and they leave a ton of room for you to mix it up. Whether you like them ripped, faded, bell-bottomed, or skinny, they are seriously a must-have. Look for jeans that fit you perfectly — meaning they hug you in all the right places and flatter your body type.

The Blazer

They can be dressed-up or dressed-down, and pair well with almost any style of pants or shirts. Blazer’s come in many colors, but I suggest opting for a neutral that can be paired with most of your existing clothes. They can be worn with jeans, dress pants, dresses, and almost anything.

The White Tee

Undoubtedly the most versatile piece you must have in your closet. It can be paired with anything, any color, anytime. This is not something you need to spend a lot of money on — a lot of stores have ones for around $10 which makes them easy to replace if it gets stained or ruined. Make sure to keep it white by washing it with bleach every once in awhile!

The Little Black Dress. Except, your fave dress doesn’t have to be black. Finding a flattering dress in a neutral color (black, beige, cream, gray) are important to have because they can be styled differently with different statement jewelry that makes it feel like a whole new dress each time. Sometimes splurging on a dress that makes you feel amazing is worth it, and it makes dressing up that much more stress-free.

A Raincoat

This is especially a must-have for the rainy season — I feel like I practically live in mine some days! Just because it’s a raincoat doesn’t mean it can’t be stylish and flattering, tons of stores like Target and Nordstrom sell ones that are not as sporty. Play with different styles and lengths to find one that suits you best.

Sunglasses are key in protecting your eyes from the sun and looking your best. My advice is that rather than trend, focus on choosing a style that flatters your face. For example, if you have a rounder face shape, choose sunnies that are more square and stay away from round lenses. I have a few good quality pairs of sunglasses that are neutral in colour, and I buy cheap on-trend ones so I don’t have to worry when it goes out of style.

Owning a cardigan in a neutral color yields tons of benefits. It makes it easy to add to any outfit on cooler nights and also often fits under larger coats and sweaters. They are also perfect to pack in a suitcase because they are compact and don’t take up too much room!

Button-Down Shirt

The epitome of a timeless classic, a button-down shirt is another great example of an item that goes with everything. On more casual days, opt for yours with a pair of jeans and sneakers, and when you need to dress it up, tuck a button-down into a skirt or pleated dress pants. Different styles lend themselves to different looks, and so larger “boyfriend style” button-downs can be worn like a cardigan underneath a top.

Now, this is not to say that you shouldn’t have lots of color and pattern in your wardrobe (you know I love mixing and matching patterns!) but having these staple items will make incorporating those colorful ones that much easier. This way, you know you always have pieces that make you look and feel your best.

Furthermore, having a neutral outfit leaves more space for funky and fun jewelry!!

Also, be sure to let me know the things you love most about fashion, jewelry, trending styles -- and all things in between!
