Now that 2018 is winding to a close, I always like to take some time to think back and reflect on the year that has passed. I reflect on the many ways in which my life has changed, improved, and all the amazing things I’ve been so blessed to experience. One of my fave things to do is to reflect on all the best and wacky fashion trends that I’ve either adopted into my wardrobe or some others that are just too crazy to imagine. Each year, new trends come and go, while others are here to stay. So, I’ve compiled a list of the year’s trends that have graced magazine covers and runways, as well as the trends I’ve worn myself.
Here’s my take on the trends I love, and some others I hope get left behind in 2019:
Tiny Sunglasses: PASS IT
This is an odd trend that became super popular this past year, especially among celebrities. These aren’t just small-framed glasses, but super tiny sunglasses that basically don’t protect your eyes from well, anything. I love sunglasses, but I love ones that actually cover my eyes from the sun, which is why I give this crazy trend a pass.
Sequins: LOVE IT
Y’all know I love sparkle! From dresses to jewelry to purses and shirts, sequins have been all the rage this past year. I think sequins are the perfect way to push the boundary and stand out, and there is nothing I love more than sparkles and shine! I hope this trend follows me into next year.
Thong Jeans: PASS IT
This crazy trend first graced the runway during Tokyo’s 2017 Fashion Week, but this year, a few American brands picked up this style as well. Carmar Denim, a brand out of Los Angeles, created their own knockoff version and sold them for $168. Not only did people buy these, but there was a waiting list to get them! This confusing trend gives ripped jeans a whole new meaning… I surely hope this was just a fad because I can tell you for certain I won’t be getting on any waitlist for a pair of these.
Plaid: LOVE IT
I have totally taken advantage of this trend over the past year. I’ve incorporated tons of plaid into my outfits, especially my plaid shirts with the custom belle sleeves! Not to mention so many designers channeled some form of plaid, tweed, or blazer look for their collections. It’s super versatile (think of it as a neutral— even though it’s not!) and can be paired with many different patterns and fabrics.
Chunky Dad Sneakers: PASS IT
Now, I love a good sneaker, but this trend seems a little bit much. These sneakers were first spotted on the runways, but quickly trickled down into major department stores. These shoes just seem outlandish and odd, so I definitely give these a pass.
Jeans: LOVE IT
I know what you’re thinking — when were jeans ever out of style? Well, technically they weren’t, but this past year we saw a whole new array of denim styles, from patchwork denim, the revised bootcut, embroidery, as well as a return of the dark wash. Jeans are never “out”, but the styles that are popular are always changing. While I took a definite pass on the thong jean, I totally love the other kinds of jeans that were in this year and I can’t wait to rock all these styles into the New Year.
Clear Plastic Shoes: PASS IT
This may be the mom in me, but all I can think of when I see these shoes are blisters. I mean, these seriously cannot be comfortable, especially when it’s hot outside and your feet are all squished into a plastic boot. Furthermore, there is something about having sweaty feet in plastic heels that does not seem like it can be sanitary or comfortable. I hope this trend was just a quick fad, so I’m giving it a major pass.
Animal Print: LOVE IT
Now I don’t know about you, but this is one 2018 trend I’m glad to stick with. Animal prints have been super popular and they’ve popped up across all my social media, in stores, as well as in my closet in the form of shoes, shirts, jewelry, and accessories. I’ll definitely be rocking animal print into the New Year.
Wavy Brows: PASS IT
This is another what were you thinking trend. I’m all for a fierce brow but a waved brow? This one just doesn’t make sense to me. It just seems too unnatural, but it’s one of those wacky trends that you just have to give a good laugh to whoever thought that one up. Wavy brows get a pass from me.
Statement Earrings: LOVE IT
Were statement earrings ever out of style? If you ask me, I’d say they’ve always been super fabulous. I especially love statement earrings, but they’ve become more popular this past year, gracing more covers of magazines than ever before. They truly add a pop to any outfit, and I love the way I look and feel in a pair of statement earrings. This is a trend I love and will be bringing with me into the New Year.
High Fashion Crocs: PASS IT
Just in case you thought Crocs couldn’t get any less fashion-friendly, here is high fashion brand Balenciaga’s makeover of the famous rubber slip-ons. Crocs are one thing as a casual shoe around the house… but on a runway!? I don’t think so, so I’m giving a pass to this crazy trend.
I always love to give a good laugh to the craziest trends, as well as reflect on the trends I’ve adopted into my wardrobe. But mostly, I wonder what 2019 has in store for us…
