The Best & Worst Oscar Looks 2019

As most of you probably already know, the Oscar’s was this past Sunday and famous movie stars gathered in Los Angeles to celebrate the best movies of the year. And while there were some really great movies that I loved, my favorite part of the Oscar’s is always the fashion. To me, seeing all the celebs in gorgeous gowns and fabulous tuxedos is the best. It’s super over-the-top but I love it. The real heroes are the designers, who year after year manage to come up with intricate, beautiful, and glitzy gowns. Here’s a rundown of the best looks (in my opinion) from this year’s Oscar’s.

There is not a red carpet that J-Lo doesn’t rock. In fact, she somehow manages to keep looking younger and better each year. I love this metallic Tom Ford gown, which she paired with a simple silvery makeup and jewelry.

Regina King

While King took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in If Beale Street Could Talk, this dress made her the true winner. Wearing an all-white Oscar de la Renta, she dazzled in this outfit. I absolutely love the fit of the dress as well as the ruching on the side. It’s perfection!

KiKi Layne

Another actress from If Beale Street Could Talk, this pink Atelier Versace gown looks soo pretty on Layne. I love the shade of pink, the amazing shoulder ruffle, and the simple jewelry that really makes the dress and Layne herself stand out.

Constance Wu

Wu begins a series of four actresses from Crazy Rich Asians who absolutely killed it on the red carpet this year. This lemony Versace gown is so delicate and pretty, and I love the chiffon and the off-the-shoulder with the light beading on the bodice.

Michelle Yeoh

This is another Crazy Rich Asians off-the-shoulder gown that is absolutely stunning. The intricate beading is to die for and I love that gorgeous piece of jewelry on her hand. Her fair skin tone absolutely suits this look and it somehow manages to be silvery and glitzy yet natural and understated at the same time.

Gemma Chan

I love an over-the-top dress. However even on Chan’s small frame, the dress doesn’t swallow her up but suits her so well. The dress is Valentino, and I love the this frilly fuchsia look because it just looks so fun yet comfortable (it even has pockets!).

Another actress from Crazy Rich Asians, Awkwafina slayed this metallic pantsuit look. I love when celebs go against the norm, and this look was definitely out there but worth it. She’s an American rapper, and I loved that she stuck to her more boyish and rebellion style.

Lady Gaga

Okay, this look is ALL about that insane piece of jewelry hanging around her neck. While her Alexander McQueen gown and gloves are perfectly poised and perfect, to me, it’s that necklace that steals the show. The necklace is a Tiffany 128.54-carat, $30 million stunner. Gaga looks drop dead gorgeous but that necklace is out of this world.

Billy Porter

Porter is the first man to wear a gown to the Oscar’s, and I love it. Wearing a Christian Siriano custom gown, he stole the show in this luxe velvet piece. Maybe in the future we’ll be seeing more men in gowns?

Charlize Theron

Known for always looking fantastic, this look definitely surprised me as a standout. This baby blue color is interesting especially against her dark brown hair. The dress is also backless, giving the very boring front a little surprise at the back. I’m not a huge fan of the huge puffed shoulders, but I am obsessed with her chunky pearl necklace and layered diamond bracelets on her wrist. Not one of my fave dresses, but I’m a huge fan of her jewelry.

Helen Mirren

I love that Mirren always looks so classy and effortless, and this year’s Oscar’s look is no exception. Her coral chiffon gown looks timeless and super age-appropriate. I love that her lip color, nails, and clutch were all matching, pulling the whole outfit together. Her insanely huge diamond necklace is also to die for.

Amy Poehler

Another pantsuit I LOVED from last night is Poehler’s black Alberta Ferretti piece. It somehow manages to be so fierce yet still fabulous, stunning, and feminine which is what I love about menswear-inspired pieces.

Rachel Weisz

Not only do I love this color so much, but something about the delicate beading on the bottom with the latex t-shirt like top just goes so well together. It sounds weird on paper, but I think it looks sooo gorgeous on her. Not to mention I love her jewels and her very dainty, gorgeous headband.

Kelly Ripa

Kelly Ripa is another one of those celebs who always looks gorgeous. She especially looked gorgeous in this dark metallic grey Christian Siriano gown with a black beaded floral pattern. It looks simple but reads so elegant, which is why it made by best list.

Octavia Spencer

Another celeb who wore Christian Siriano is Spencer, who wore this absolutely stunning navy blue sparkly gown. This dress reminded me of a starry night, and it is so simple yet elegant. Love love love!

Marina de Tavira

Nominated for her role in Roma, de Tavira looked beautiful in this ruffled crimson gown. It looks so elegant and classy, especially with her gorgeous curled hair and diamond statement earrings. She definitely put herself on the map with this look!

This list is small, but there were a few celebs who just didn’t do it for me. These were mostly just a little too over the top for my liking, just missing the mark a little bit.

Olivia Colman

While Colman took home the Oscar for Best Actress, she definitely doesn’t take home the award for Best Dressed. I find this gown so weird, the muted green color with a grey chiffon sleeve over top just seems too mismatched and odd. I think both the dull grey and green colors don’t suit one another, it just looks a little sad.

Kacey Musgraves

While I absolutely LOVE the color of this dress, the giant ruffles are just a little too much for my liking. I don’t hate it, but it’s definitely not one of my favorites.

Linda Cardellini

This dress just seems so overwhelming, and it sort of reminds me of something a Muppet would wear for some reason. The color is fabulous, but all the ruffles just take over her small frame and don’t suit her at all. I’m also not a huge fan of the high-low hemline either. Overall, this dress is just way too over the top and not in a good way.

Tiny Fey

There is nothing at all wrong with this look, but it makes it into my worst category just because it is so boring. Fey’s royal blue gown is pretty, but I don’t think there is anything super interesting about her dress and makeup.
