A well-organized closet indicates a well-organized life. It starts your day off on the right foot, saves time, and is a definite mood-booster. As Carrie Bradshaw famously said, “I like my money where I can see it… hanging in my closet.”
Now, what woman doesn’t love an organized closet space!? Here are my 10 fail-safe tips and tricks to minimizing clutter and maximizing space.
1. Sort According to Type
Are you ever scrambling to find your favourite sweater but can’t remember which drawer or shelf you stuffed it in? By categorizing your clothes based on garment type, you can quickly spot the clothes you want when you want them. Furthermore, keep the clothes you wear most often in the most accessible spaces, and leave occasion pieces off to the side.
On top of sorting your clothes according to the garment type, subcategorize your wardrobe by color-coding items. This makes it easy to find your favourite white t-shirt or dress, and also looks gorgeous and streamlined.
3. Use Velvet Hangers
Preserve important closet real estate by using velvet hangers. Not only are they thinner than plastic or wooden ones, but also the nature of the fabric helps prevent clothes from slipping off. Furthermore, uniform hangers make a closet instantly look more organized (even if it’s not!).
4. Regularly Purge Items
I know that giving away your clothing items can sometimes be a painful experience. BUT, it’s super necessary and should be done every six months to ensure you aren’t holding on to things you haven’t worn and likely will not wear. Follow the cardinal rule: if you haven’t worn it in one year, it’s time for it to go! I find this process is sometimes easier with a friend, so invite someone over to help you purge those things you really don’t need.
5. Contain It
Smaller items such as scarves, intimates, or jewelry are best organized in boxes or containers. Small boxes can be found at places like The Container Store or IKEA, but simple drawer dividers work well too. For an economical option, shop your house to find existing shoeboxes and small containers that work as great drawer storage. By dividing your smaller clothing items, you will never have to rummage through your drawers again!
6. Think Outside the Box
If you’re anything like me and your closet seems to be busting at the seams, think of alternative spaces in your bedroom where you can store clothes. A bookcase is a great option for items such as sweaters, shoes, and t-shirts. Plus, if your bookcase doesn’t have doors, having your clothes on display is a great way to force you to keep organized!
7. Stagger Shoes
I suggest keeping your shoes on shelves and staggering pairs (one forward, one backward) because it saves space and actually allows more shoes to be stacked next to one another. I recommend small, stackable shelves that can go on the floor of your closet. It also looks aesthetically pleasing and makes it easier to pick shoes to match your outfit!
8. Separate Seasonal
I suggest separating more seasonal clothes and putting them away for a couple of months. Not only does this clear up space in your closet, but it is also super refreshing to be reminded of certain pieces after you forgot about them over the winter. Store these items in marked bins or space-saver bags, and I promise that after a couple of months, your retired clothes will free brand-new all over again.
9. Leave Jewelry On Display
Organize your jewelry using small trays and jewelry stands. Categorize different items such as necklaces, bracelets, and rings and use different trays for your different types of jewelry. When your jewelry is on display, it becomes much easier to remember to accessorize!
10. Make it Personal
Adding personal touches such as artwork or a fresh paint job can truly make getting ready in the morning much more enjoyable. Since they are closed most of the time, a closet can display special trinkets or a fun pop of color that you wouldn’t normally want anywhere else.
